Obasanjo Raises Alarm Over Rising Tensions, Says Nigeria Must Never Return to War.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has appealed to Nigerians to safeguard the nation's unity, warning that the country cannot afford to relive the horrors of another civil war.

Speaking on the importance of peace and national cohesion, Obasanjo stressed that some of the underlying issues that contributed to the 1967–1970 conflict still exist and must be addressed through dialogue, fairness, and responsible leadership rather than hostility and division.

He noted that a renewed conflict would bring unimaginable suffering, destroy economic gains, and threaten the future of millions of Nigerians. According to him, the painful lessons of the past should inspire citizens to work harder toward reconciliation and mutual understanding.
The elder statesman called on political leaders, traditional institutions, religious bodies, and the youth to reject hate speech, ethnic intolerance, and actions capable of undermining national stability. He emphasized that Nigeria's strength lies in its diversity and collective commitment to peaceful coexistence.

Obasanjo maintained that preserving peace is a shared responsibility, urging every Nigerian to place the country's unity above sectional interests and political differences.

He warned that the cost of another civil war would be far too great, adding that future generations deserve a nation built on justice, inclusion, and sustainable development rather than conflict and mistrust.
His message serves as a timely reminder that while challenges remain, dialogue, tolerance, and patriotism remain the surest foundations for a stronger and more united Nigeria.
