The presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), Esther Nkem Okereke, has warned that Nigeria is facing a defining moment as rising insecurity, deepening poverty, unemployment, and economic hardship continue to threaten the country's stability and future prosperity.
Speaking in Abuja during activities commemorating Democracy Day, Okereke urged Nigerians not to surrender to despair, insisting that effective leadership, institutional reforms, and collective responsibility can still restore the nation’s promise.
She noted that millions of citizens are battling severe economic realities while confidence in democratic institutions continues to diminish, stressing that urgent action is needed to reverse the trend.
According to the NRM standard-bearer, the ideals that inspired Nigeria’s democratic struggle must not be allowed to fade amid present-day challenges.
Recalling the significance of June 12, she reflected on her early experiences growing up during one of the country's most critical democratic periods, describing the day as a lasting symbol of hope, sacrifice, and the people's desire for justice and good governance.
Okereke paid glowing tribute to the heroes of democracy, including the late MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, Beko Ransome-Kuti, Chima Ubani, journalists, student activists, and countless Nigerians who fought for civil liberties and democratic rule.
She maintained that their sacrifices envisioned a nation where every citizen could live with dignity, enjoy quality education and healthcare, and access opportunities without political or social barriers.
Painting a sobering picture of current realities, she lamented the rising cost of living, persistent insecurity, and widespread unemployment, arguing that the country's democratic gains are being undermined by institutional weaknesses and economic distress.
“The pain experienced by millions of Nigerians cannot be reduced to numbers on paper. These are real people whose hopes and aspirations deserve urgent attention and meaningful solutions,” she said.
To address these concerns, Okereke unveiled her ESTHER Agenda, a comprehensive development blueprint centred on energy expansion, educational reform, improved security, digital governance, accessible healthcare, affordable housing, large-scale job creation, and the restoration of integrity in public life.
She said the initiative aims to create millions of employment opportunities through investments in agriculture, innovation, housing, and technology-driven enterprises.
The NRM candidate further challenged young Nigerians to remain committed to national development rather than giving in to hopelessness or seeking escape from the country's difficulties.
According to her, the creativity, talent, and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerian youths represent the most valuable resources for building a prosperous and inclusive future.
She concluded by expressing confidence that through unity, accountability, and visionary leadership, Nigeria can overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger for future generations.
