Tension has gripped residents of Lassa community in Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State after gunmen reportedly abducted an unspecified number of students sitting for the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
The attack occurred on Monday morning at Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, while candidates were reportedly writing one of their examination papers. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the school premises, causing panic among students, teachers, and residents.
According to reports, one teacher lost his life during the incident, while another sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention. The exact number of students taken by the attackers has yet to be officially confirmed.
The Borno State Police Command acknowledged the incident, revealing that security operatives are still working to determine the number of missing students and to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso stated that security agencies had been mobilised to the area and that coordinated efforts were underway to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend those responsible.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the security of educational institutions in northeastern Nigeria, where communities continue to grapple with insurgency-related violence and criminal attacks despite ongoing military operations.
Parents and residents have expressed fears over the safety of children in schools, particularly during national examinations, calling on the federal and state governments to strengthen security measures around learning facilities.
As of press time, authorities had not released an official figure for the number of abducted students, while rescue operations remained ongoing.
