The political rift between former allies has taken a dramatic legal turn as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has instituted an ₦8 billion defamation lawsuit against actor-turned-politician and former campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.
The suit, filed at the High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, follows controversial comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during a television interview on June 8, where he accused Obi of involvement in financial impropriety relating to the selection of House of Representatives candidates.
According to court documents, Obi's legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Alex Ejesieme, described the statements as false, malicious, and deliberately intended to tarnish the former Anambra governor's reputation and political standing.
The legal action comes after a seven-day ultimatum reportedly issued to Okonkwo demanding a public retraction, apology, and compensation. With no resolution reached and the actor maintaining his position, the matter has now moved to the courts.
Obi is seeking ₦5 billion in general damages for injury to his reputation, ₦2 billion in aggravated damages over the continued circulation of the allegations, and ₦1 billion in exemplary damages, which his lawyers argue are necessary due to the intentional amplification of the claims.
Beyond monetary compensation, the suit also requests a judicial order compelling Okonkwo to publish an unequivocal apology across major media platforms and social media channels, remove all allegedly defamatory content, and refrain permanently from making similar statements in the future.
The dispute marks a stunning collapse in relations between two men who once stood shoulder to shoulder during the 2023 presidential campaign. Okonkwo served as one of Obi's most visible defenders at the time but has since emerged as a vocal critic following their political realignments.
Adding another layer to the controversy is the position of House of Representatives aspirant Obunike Ohaegbu, whom Okonkwo allegedly cited as the source of his claims. Ohaegbu has publicly denied accusing Obi of demanding money or engaging in any form of bribery, insisting that his statements were misrepresented.
Political observers say the high-profile legal battle could have far-reaching implications, not only for the individuals involved but also for the broader discourse on accountability, freedom of expression, and defamation within Nigeria's increasingly polarized political environment.
As both camps prepare for what promises to be a closely watched courtroom confrontation, many Nigerians will be keenly observing whether the case results in reconciliation, vindication, or an even deeper fracture between two once-trusted allies.
The matter remains before the court, and all allegations are yet to be judicially determined.
